The Mentalist "So Long and Thanks For All the Red Snapper" Review

"The Mentalist" in a nutshell: It's all an ILLUSION (read: VISUAL LIES), a product of a deranged imagination. (See B.S.)

Dr. Linus Wagner: Everything you told me, Mr. Jane, is total fiction, isn't it?

Jane:  From the INCEPTION

Patrick Jane takes a walk on the beach in "So Long and Thanks For All the Red Snapper" looking for buried treasure and discovers "Lisbun's" lovelife buried in the past.

Why "So Long and Thanks For All the Red Snapper?"

Besides naming each episode with a reference to Jane's nemesis, Red John, Bruno Heller is well-read: the title refers to Douglas Adams' "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy."s (H2G2) fourth book, "So Long and Thanks For All the Fish."   The phrase has  been adopted by some science fiction fans as a humorous way to say "goodbye."  Born in '52, Adams,  a fervent atheist, said goodbye at 49,  suffering from a case of terminal satire.  (See, Doug, "42" was not the answer to everything. Oh, snap.)

H2G2: H2 Cho said goodbye to Summer, his Ho CI and summer fling, when she lied to him about a bag of drugs she stole.  Seems Summer had a serious love affair with the Big H, and Cho, who also had a drug problem, knew that he would always be her second love.(Oh, Snap)  G2 - The CBI investigation of the murder of surfer boy on the beach leads to Lisbon's brokenhearted ex-fiance, Greg, who is now married to Gert (G2). Lisbon said goodbye to Greg and their engagement when she was only 17.  But the flame of love still smoulders in both, which was the first sign that Lisbon was capable of a meaningful relationship other than with the dogs she has photos of on her desk. Greg says Lisbon lied to him about "something" but the writers apparently couldn't come up with a reason to share that with us. Greg sure knows how to pick them, as Gert lied to him too when she went bodysurfing with the surfer boy. (Oh, Snap)

(See B.S.) It's all an illusion:  In H2G2  Arthur Dent is ready to believe that the past eight years were all just a figment of his stressed-out imagination. (Coincidentally,  "The Mentalist" is slated to run eight seasons.) But a gift-wrapped fishbowl (one man's fishbowl is a another man's snow globe) with a cryptic inscription, the mysterious disappearance of Earth's dolphins, and the discovery of his battered copy of  The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy all conspire to give Arthur the sneaking suspicion that something otherworldly is indeed going on: the dolphins left Earth for an alternate dimension but not before replacing the destroyed Earth with a new version and transporting everything to it as a way of saving humans.

"It  is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged imagination."

Scrambled Eggs: TM is Bruno Heller's attempt to push the envelope of the "suspension of disbelief"  to force the viewer with half a REVIEW BRAIN to realize "The Mentalist" is an ILLUSION.  Patrick Jane appears to be a Sherlock Homes super-sleuth but  is  a mental patient who suffers from paranoid delusions due to feelings of extreme guilt in the deaths of his wife and child who were burned as he was (CBI = intensive burn care?)  in a horrific car accident when he failed to stop at a BLINKING RED LIGHT - hence the RJ symbol - while he was driving intoxicated and spends his days watching TV shows, which generate his ideas for the delusional episodes.Note: Jane's eggshell blue car - a vintage 1972 Citroen DS 20 that Warner Bros., producer of "The Mentalist" for CBS, had in its inventory. It was used in the 2008 movie "Speed Racer." For "The Mentalist," the car was shipped from Germany and painted eggshell blue (it was originally red).

"Red John" is the  Professor Moriarty-type character in a "Tommy Westphall" imaginary world like "St. Elsewhere" and "Life on Mars" that is the dream state of  Jane. Interestingly, the fake Jane character in "Red Moon" where another corpse was found in a burned car was named Ellis Mars.

The Man with Two Names -- Red John's alias is ROY Tagliaferro (read: "cut iron").   The ROY CUT IRON  anagrams are "court irony" and "you r citron."  How ironic that Jane, the court jester who arrives at the crime scene in his Citroen,  a master reader of how others' emotions control them,  was a prisoner of his IRON-ic chains to the past.  Until Jane leaves his old life behind, The Mentalist is on the mental list, a PRISONER of his own device.

Honored: Simon received a picture frame of himself in the title role from the TF1 studios, who screen the successful drama in France

RED JOHN CLUE OF THE WEEK

Jane:  "If you can't find something you seek it is because it is already in your possession."

Jane seeks Red John.  It should be noted Jane was talking to Lisbon.  Lisbon could be Red John but Jane does not possess Lisbon. (Oh, Red Snap her)

Jane:  Lisbuns, doesn't this all seem a little fishy?
