The Mentalist "Ruby Slippers" Review

"The Mentalist" in a nutshell: It's all an ILLUSION (read: VISUAL LIES) like a ROY G BIV rainbow.

Best End Of The Rainbow Ever

Dr. Linus Wagner: Everything you told me, Mr. Jane, is total fiction, isn't it? (See B.S.)
Jane: From the INCEPTION

"Ruby Slippers," an homage to L. Frank Baum's "Wizard of Oz," appears to be another "Mentalist" investigative procedural demonstrating once again that Patrick Jane is an amazing Wizard when it comes to reading other peoples' emotions, even those of Drag Queens hiding behind heavy makeup and transgender wigs.  But like the "Wizard of OZ"  things are not what they appear to be.

Stranger than fiction:  Frank Baum was really a KKK Wizard behind the curtain. As editor of the Aberdeen Saturday Pioneer he stated: “The whites, by law of conquest, by civilization, are masters of the American continent, and the best safety of the frontier settlements will be secured by the total annihilation of the few remaining Indians…We had better, in order to protect our civilization, follow it up … and wipe these untamed and untameable creatures from the face of the earth.”

Release the KKK Flying Monkeys.

In uncovering the identity of the corpse in the burned car Jane pulls back the curtain to reveal the true identities of the cast of characters, including Jane, the Wizard behind the curtain:

Glennda Snow the Drag Queen who is a Man in Morgue with a heart of gold.
"Dorothy" - Archie Bloom, a  gay teen now known as Fifi Nix,  who never wants to go home.
"Dorothy's" father- a cowardly lion who chases the gay away.
"Dorothy's" abusive boyfriend - the heartless "tinman" with the tin of crystal meth near his heart
"Dorothy's" abusive coworker- the Jughead homophobe who only wanted to scare Archie.

Jane and "Dorothy" have much in common: "Dorothy" is a gay teen fleeing his troubled life and Jane is trying to break from his troubled past.  Interestingly,  Simon Baker got his big break playing a gay actor in "LA Confidential."   "Ruby Slippers"  and "OZ" have a common plot twist in The End as "Dorothy" and Dorothy are the ones behind the curtain.  A look behind the curtain also reveals "The Mentalist"  is a place Jane dreams of  - somewhere over the rainbow and "Over the Cuckoo's Nest." (Note the long closeup on the Ken Kesey book jacket Cho holds with the reference to "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.")

"Somewhere over the rainbow, cuckoo birds fly
Cuckoo birds fly over the rainbow, why then, oh why can't I?

The Mentalist - Tommy Westphall - Mars - Tin Man Connection

The clever long con of  "The Mentalist" was Red John's identity as  Bruno has dropped more red herrings casting suspicion on every character on the show.  The answer was right in front of us the whole time: Jane was Red John, his imaginary nemesis "perfect symmetry" alter-ego (Jane/John),  Professor Moriarty character in a "Tommy Westphall" imaginary world like "St. Elsewhere's" snow globe and "Life on Mars" that is the dream state of  Jane.  TM is Bruno Heller's attempt to push the envelope of the "suspension of disbelief"  to force the viewer with half a REVIEW BRAIN to realize "The Mentalist" is an ILLUSION.

Burning clues:  Jane appears to be a Sherlock Homes super-sleuth character but in reality is a mental patient with a cracked eggshell who suffers from paranoid delusions due to feelings of extreme guilt in the deaths of his wife and child who were burned as he was (CBI = intensive burn care?)  in a horrific car accident involving a driver named Tanner when he failed to stop at a BLINKING RED LIGHT - hence the RJ symbol - while he was driving intoxicated and spends his days watching TV shows, which generate his ideas for the delusional episodes.  "The Mentalist" is obsessed with fire, as in half the episodes it plays a significant plot point.  Out of the Frye-ing pan into the... As Kristina Frye discovered, when you get too close to Red John, you get burned.  "Tiger, Tiger burning bright, they were "Au-burned."  In the "Red Mile" episode Jane arrives at a crime scene outside Auburn, California.  Shouts from Alabama football fans of "Roll Tide" first appeared during the Alabama-Auburn Tiger game in 1907. Curiously, a corpse was found in a burned car in "Ruby Slippers," in which Jane discovers the identity of Fifi Nix, like Jane's Phoenix, has risen from the ashes of his past life. Fake Red John read all about it - catch the fire-y headline on the newspaper Tim Carter was reading before Jane shot him.  Red John appeared to Jane in the burn mask in "Red Sky.."  The fake Jane character in "Red Moon" where another corpse was found in a burned car was named Ellis Mars.

Ellis Mars: The mind is a powerful weapon. It can create reality.

The Man Behind the Red Curtain Red John's alias is ROY Tagliaferro (read: "cut iron").   The ROY CUT IRON  anagrams are "court irony" and "you r citron."  How ironic that Jane, the court jester who arrives at the crime scene in his Citroen,  a master reader of how others' emotions control them,  was a prisoner of his chains to the past.  Until Jane leaves his old life behind, The Mentalist is on the mental list, a PRISONER of his own device.

Honored: Simon received a picture frame of himself in the title role from the TF1 studios, who screen the successful drama in France

Jane:  Lisbuns, the truth be told, like Frank Baum, I'm just a cowardly lyin.
