The Mentalist "There Will Be Blood" Review
The Mentalist in a nutshell: It's all an ILLUSION (read: VISUAL LIES). Imagine that.
Dr. Linus Wagner: Everything you told me, Mr. Jane, is total fiction, isn't it?
Jane: From the INCEPTION
"There Will Be Blood" should be titled "There Will Be Lies" as Lore lies to Jane, Jane lies to Lisbuns, Lisbuns lies to Bertram, and Rigsby lies to himself. Bertram said it best, "Can we trust anyone?" Lies. That's what this whole show is about. Speaking of lies, Dick Cheney must be a big fan of Lorelei who proved torture works when she forced confessions out of Julia Howard and Jason Lennon that Red John was behind the disappearance of Miranda and others from the shelter for abused women. But as Dick Cheney proved, when we believe lies, we usually reach a DEAD END.
Hook, Fishing Line and Sink Her: In an amazing fishing expedition, Jane finds a photo of Lennon, the master baiter, and connects him to the fishing line he found at Howard's end-of-the-line for the missing women. Lorelei lets Jane off the hook for her escape when she meets her end in a warehouse of carnival memories like her sister.
Speaking of fishing, this episode had the usual "Red" herrings: Steven "red shift" Doppler, one of the trustees of the shelter, may have been saved by a trio of red-headed stepchildren outside of the Fairchild Hotel. Homeland Security, which apparently has nothing better to do since OBL was killed, has Red John in its sights.
The moral of the story: "It's a pattern, It's what it's all about." (e.g. car crashes, fire-y endings and dangerous intersections)
But it's not real. Jane: Pretend I'm not here As J.Lennon, who had a son Julian, said: IMAGINE - This is not here.
Scrambled eggs: The truth is Jane appears to be a Sherlock Homes super-sleuth character, but in reality is a mental patient with a cracked eggshell who suffers from paranoid delusions due to feelings of extreme guilt in the deaths of his wife and child who were burned as he was (CBI = intensive burn care?) in a horrific car accident involving a driver named Tanner when he failed to stop at a BLINKING RED LIGHT CROSSING AN INTERSECTION, hence the RJ symbol, while he was driving intoxicated (Patrick Jane anagram is "Captain Jerk") and spends his days with the remote watching TV shows, which generate his ideas for the delusional episodes. Note: Jane's eggshell blue car - a vintage 1972 Citroen DS 20 that Warner Bros., producer of "The Mentalist" for CBS, had in its inventory. It was used in the 2008 movie "Speed Racer." For "The Mentalist," the car was shipped from Germany and painted eggshell blue (it was originally red).
Burning Clues: Jane burns his Red John files with a bottle of booze. "The Mentalist" is obsessed with fire, as in half the episodes it plays a significant plot point. Out of the Frye-ing pan into the... As Kristina Frye discovered, when you get too close to Red John, you get burned. "Tiger, Tiger burning bright, they were "Au-burned." In the "Red Mile" episode Jane arrives at a crime scene outside Auburn, California. Shouts from Alabama football fans of "Roll Tide" first appeared during the Alabama-Auburn Tiger IRON BOWL game in 1907. Curiously, a corpse was found in a burned car in "Ruby Slippers," in which Jane discovers the identity of Fifi Nix, like Jane's Phoenix, has risen from the ashes of his past life. In "Red Dawn" Jane is given a desk next to a fire extinguisher that is there, then it's gone, then it's there again. Fake Red John read all about it - catch the fire-y headline on the front page of the newspaper Tim Carter was reading before Jane shot him. Red John appeared to Jane in the burn mask. Jane: It's not my fire.
Total Fictional Recall: Red John is Patrick Jane's imaginary evil twin, his "perfect symmetry" alter-ego (Jane/John) Professor Moriarty character in a Tommy Westphall" imaginary world like "St. Elsewhere's" snow globe and "Life on Mars" that is the dream state of Jane. NB. The fake Jane character in "Red Moon" where a corpse was found in a burned car was named Ellis Mars (El - He is Mars).

The Mentalist "Red Lacquer Nail Polish" Review
The Mentalist in a nutshell: It's all an ILLUSION (read: VISUAL LIES) that spontaneously combusts under the heat of examination.
Dr. Linus Wagner: Everything you told me, Mr. Jane, is total fiction, isn't it?
In "Red Lacquer Nail Polish" Patrick Jane uses smoke to snuff out a firebird. The firebird is Elise Vogelsong, who is played by Mariette Hartley, a crazy loon. In fool disclosure, Hartley is my least favorite actress, whose mere presence on the screen is akin to the sound of scraping nails on a chalkboard. A character actress who got famous for doing Polaroid commercials ("this business is perfect for people who live in ILLUSIONS") Hartley suffers from mental illness and so was perfectly cast to play the crazy socialite Elise Vogelsong who burned a Viet vet in her scheme to violate her own trust. Jane arrives at her spooky mansion to learn the socialite apparently spontaneously combusted like a human candle. Jane notices Vogelsong likes to read Rex Stout murder mysteries and does not get burned by the illusion of burning nonsense. As master manipulator himself of illusions, Jane sees through the transparent scheme that read like her nail polish. Jane eliminates the Usual Suspects that poor dumb Rigsby suspected and smokes out a Robins and Vogelsong on her yacht "Birdsong." "Lisbuns" stands around as eye candy, while Rigsby and Cho complain about life and the need to "MOVE ON" like Van Pelt, who is increasingly remote.
Booze at the heart of the matter: On a bender of his own, Jane determines there is a missing whiskey glass at the crime scene and concludes the murderer threw it into the fire. Some Rex Stout Thriller. The episode is rich like the Ehrich scotch in references to Michael Jackson, who was famous for spontaneously combusting while filming a commercial and like Vogelsong had a doctor on the payroll who prescribed too many meds to help her sleep.
The moral of the story: don't overlook the Burning Clues.

The Mentalist "Red in Tooth and Claw" Review
The Mentalist in a nutshell: It's all an ILLUSION (read: Visual Lies), it's easy to tell.
Dr. Linus Wagner: Everything you told me, Mr. Jane, is total fiction, isn't it?
A tell within a tell: The program isn't real. Patrick Jane appears to be a "Wizard of Odds" in poker but he's really the joker in the deck. In "Red in Tooth and Claw" Jane demonstrates his amazing memory skill using storyline imagery to burn the killer of a brilliant student, Linda Parfrey (read: fairlyland rep) who was attracted to a moth. It is amazing how Jane concocted a story by just looking at objects, reminds me of Verbal Kint aka Keyser Söze of the "Usual Suspects." Jane also demonstrates his skill at cards by revealing the poker face of his boss to let Grace Van Pelt get a free ride to the "White Hat" - also a convenient time for her to give birth.
Stuck on the Yellow Brick Road - anyone else notice the Mentalist writers have been on this road before? The museum was the focal point of another episode, poker games have been used by Jane to win money for good causes, and even the comic banter between Rigsby and Cho - the Cowardly Lyin and the Tin Man without a heart is getting old. Hopefully, the series is not coming to an end over the rainbow. If the series is an homage to "Oz," then "White Hat" Van Pelt is the Good Witch and "Lisbuns" is Dorothy, which leaves Jane as the Wizard of Odds. The question remaining: will Jane find his "Ruby Slippers" to find his way home? (Of course, if the ratings don't improve, The Mentalist itself may be "Over the Rainbow.")
The moral of the story in "Red in Tooth and Claw": don't play with spyders, kids.
RED LIGHT
Jane appears to be a Sherlock Homes super-sleuth character, but in reality is a mental patient with a cracked eggshell who suffers from paranoid delusions due to feelings of extreme guilt in the deaths of his wife and child who were burned as he was (CBI = intensive burn care?) in a horrific car accident involving a driver named Tanner when he failed to stop at a BLINKING RED LIGHT CROSSING AN INTERSECTION, hence the RJ symbol, while he was driving intoxicated (Patrick Jane anagram is "Captain Jerk") and spends his days with the remote watching TV shows, which generate his ideas for the delusional episodes. Note: Jane's eggshell blue car - a vintage 1972 Citroen DS 20 that Warner Bros., producer of "The Mentalist" for CBS, had in its inventory. It was used in the 2008 movie "Speed Racer." For "The Mentalist," the car was shipped from Germany and painted eggshell blue (it was originally red).
Burning Clues: Jane burns his Red John files with a bottle of booze. "The Mentalist" is obsessed with fire, as in half the episodes it plays a significant plot point. Out of the Frye-ing pan into the... As Kristina Frye discovered, when you get too close to Red John, you get burned. "Tiger, Tiger burning bright, they were "Au-burned." In the "Red Mile" episode Jane arrives at a crime scene outside Auburn, California. Shouts from Alabama football fans of "Roll Tide" first appeared during the Alabama-Auburn Tiger IRON BOWL game in 1907. Curiously, a corpse was found in a burned car in "Ruby Slippers," in which Jane discovers the identity of Fifi Nix, like Jane's Phoenix, has risen from the ashes of his past life. In "Red Dawn" Jane is given a desk next to a fire extinguisher that is there, then it's gone, then it's there again. Fake Red John read all about it - catch the fire-y headline on the front page of the newspaper Tim Carter was reading before Jane shot him. Red John appeared to Jane in the burn mask. Jane: It's not my fire.

The Mentalist "Red Barn" Review
The Mentalist in a nutshell: It's all an ILLUSION (read: VISUAL LIES), as obvious as the broad side of a "Red Barn."
Dr. Linus Wagner: Everything you told me, Mr. Jane, is total fiction, isn't it?
In "Red Barn" Lisbuns is drawn into Patrick Jane's twisted paranoid Red John conspiracy, as she now suspects CBI-er Ray Haffner's ulterior motives to entice her to join him in the big expense account world of private investigators (paid by Visualize) and that Ray may have been at the Red Barn with the Smiley Face about the time the murders occurred. Turns out Ray is a Visualize member and inquires why "Lisbuns" went easy on the red head who shot a Visualize member in self defense. Turns out the Visualize member was walking a pig while intoxicated on "speed" and went ballistic on the pig when the redhead's vet mom complained about his cruelty to animals. Turns out two other Visualize members were found murdered in the secret basement that was built by moonshiners and Jane suspects is the first case of a "Red John" murder, ten years before the first recorded case. Coincidentally, the Red Barn murders and the Smiley Face discovery occur on the day CBI celebrates Lisbun's ten-year anniversary, and Rigsby gets blasted...again.
So many twists and turns in the five-year Red John saga, weary Mentalist viewers must now decide if Ray is yet another Red John plant in CBI and if Visualize is involved...again. The good news is Jane reduced his list of Red John suspects to a very manageable 408. At this pace, The Mentalist has material suspects for another five years. But will the weary viewers stay around to watch it?
"Red Barn" appears to provide background to the RJ saga, but all is not what it appears... even the Red John smiley face. The CBI investigation reveals the murder of one of the three was the result of good intentions gone bad. Visualize was going big Agro but was clearly out of its field. The business was failing and the stress pushed one past the breaking point. Add "speed" to the stress and you get a deadly combination. As "dumb" Rigsby learned again, booze, weed etc just make us do stupid things, like singing badly in front of co-workers. Perhaps the Visualize member "speeding" under the influence also killed his coworkers (one would think he would have smelled the corpses, right?). Perhaps the smiley face on the Red Barn meant "nothing at all."
Moral of the story: Sometimes things are not what they appear to be and sometimes "things just happen." But always terrible "things just happen" when speeding under the influence .

The Mentalist "Little Red Corvette" Review
The Mentalist in a NUTSHELL: It's all an ILLUSION (read: VISUAL LIES)...like TV (See B.S.).
Dr. Linus Wagner: Everything you told me, Mr. Jane, is total fiction, isn't it?
Jane: From the INCEPTION
In "Little Red Corvette" the power of Tommy Volker (that's TV, people) rests in the hands of a little boy holding the remote who witnesses the murder of a geologist who knew about the mass murder of the Brazilian tribe that threatened TV's power play. (just like the Iraq War was a power play about energy) TV orders the little boy to be killed but the hired killer says he didn't sign up to kill little boys and hides him with his brother's ex-wife and eventually kills himself by crossing a dangerous intersection. Eventually, TV learns the boy is still alive with the help of a red head in CBI who likes to watch and says "she didn't sign up for this" but gives TV the picture of the boy. TV orders another hitman to kill the boy but he refuses as he says "he didn't sign up for this." TV tracks the boy down at the Redland Zoo but "Lisbuns" puts TV in a cage. But who controls TV?
Watching the "Little Red Corvette" going around in circles, perhaps Bruno Heller was making a political statement (what goes around...) about the power of TV in the wrong hands ala the RED FOX (Furland) and friends like Prince of Darkness Dick Cheney and the revelation that its propaganda signs deceive US into criminal actions like the IRAQ WAR. And we all loved to watch the bombing of Baghdad on HDTV. (NB. Loved Volker's impression of George W. reading "My Pet Goat.") IF we don't like what we are watching, we control the remote and could make a change in our killing decisions. We could say we didn't sign up for this (we did but sent our poor unemployed men and women to do our killing for US). So who controls the remote? On "LRC" "He is MAR"(VIN PETTIGREW), but on The Mentalist it's Patrick Jane.
Moral of the story: TV deceives them, but the one with the remote has the power to change.

The Man with Two Names -- Red John's alias is ROY Tagliaferro (read: "cut iron"). The ROY CUT IRON anagrams are "court irony" and "you r citron." How ironic that Jane, the court jester who arrives at the crime scene in his Citroen, a master reader of how others' emotions control them and aware of the need to let go of the past, was a prisoner of his IRON-ic chains to the past. Until Jane leaves his old life behind, The Mentalist is on the mental list, a PRISONER of his own device.
